Our Guide to a Great First Message from admin's blog

Meeting people online and building a rapport with them takes just as much care and attention as any of your other relationships. You get from them what you put into them. Our simplest advice is to avoid sending rushed messages, take things slow, ask good questions, and build upon what you have in common.

But if this is your first message to someone, or maybe your first message of this kind ever, we understand that you’re looking for a little more than that. We’ve put together some of our favourite examples in order to spark your imagination and get comfortable with meeting people online.

Remember, be real and be positive. If you are, positive results will come your way.

1.    Hi!  I read your profile and you seem like such an interesting person.  And, we both love hunting for antiques!  What’s the best piece you’ve ever found?

2.   You live in [town]? I love that area.  I go to the theatre there every chance I get.  Have you been there?

With these messages, you’re letting him or her know that you’ve read their profile and have things in common. You’re asking a question that shows your interest but isn’t too personal.

3.   Your photo and story made a real impact on me.  I’ve had similar experiences and I’d love to get to know you better, if I may?

4.   I was captivated by your photo, then realised how much we have in common when I read your profile page. Why did you become a vegetarian five years ago?

With these messages, you’re letting him or her know that you’ve seen their photo, but it’s their life story or interests that made you send a message. You’re also letting them know that beyond having interests in common, you might also share some of the same values.

5.   I loved reading your profile. I’m [name], it’s really nice to meet you online. We both love travelling, where's your favourite place?

6.   You sound really interesting and I think we could have a lot in common. Do you like films or prefer books? Or both?

With messages like these, you’re letting him or her know that you’re sending a personalised message to them. It’s not a form letter, but rather something unique from you to them.

7.   You seem really fun and sweet. I would love to get to know you and see if we are compatible. I hope we are!

8.   I got so excited after reading your profile.  I’m a dog lover too and I was nervous that I wouldn’t see any others on this site.  How long have you had yours?

Sincerity is everything.  Though your message should focus on him or her, don’t be afraid to share something that’s important to you.  It’s ok to be a little nervous.  It’s natural and makes others feel better to realise they aren’t the only ones.

These eight examples are just the jumping off point.  Use them to guide you until you’re comfortable in creating your own.  Have fun!
